How The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time runs
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time plays on the Mac at a locked 60 fps, tested on an M6 Mac with 16 GB from the title through the opening, a new file's first scene, Link's house and Kokiri Forest, with saves. The picture is close to the Switch 2's. No iPhone or iPad app has been built yet.
How it runs
On the tested Mac, the title and its menu hold a locked 60 fps, and walking through the Kokiri village holds 60 fps at the game's top internal resolution of 1536x864. In the busiest stretch, where the village opens up, the game lowers its resolution for a moment to keep 60 fps, then returns to full.
The opening movie plays at its own 24 fps pace and cannot be skipped: on a new file it takes about 8 minutes.
The game autosaves, and the Load screen lists the saves and loads them. A manual save from Menu, System, Save keeps its picture.
Compared with a frame of console video, the picture matches closely. Small differences remain: Navi's glow is narrower, shadows are less blue and the far grass is a little brighter. The grass no longer flickers.
Memory came to about 11 GB on the 16 GB test Mac during the walk through Kokiri Forest.
Bring update v131072
Tested with update v131072, packed from the game's .nup file.
Controls
The Packed app starts in the 3D touch layout, because the game has a 3D field and uses both sticks.
- On an empty save, press A at the title, then A on New Game; the opening movie follows.
- With a save, A at the title, then A on Load.
- On the bridge outside Link's house, A climbs down the ladder.
Good to know
- The first start in a window prepares the game's graphics programs before it plays: about 33,000 of them, which took about 11.5 minutes on the tested Mac. Later starts skip it.
- The first long session after that is slower while the Mac finishes compiling graphics; the next one is not.
- The "Navi" name label in the Great Deku Tree scene was missing on an earlier build and has not been checked since.
Known issues
- No iPhone or iPad app has been built or tested yet, and its memory use makes an iPhone unlikely as it stands.
- Only the title, the opening, a new file's first scene, Link's house and Kokiri Forest have been played; the Deku Tree dungeon, combat and later areas are untested.
- Sound starts without errors, but the movies and speech have not been listened to.
- Frames of 100 to 650 ms can appear when an area first loads.
- On slower Macs the title and the movies can drop below 60 fps: an M1 Max ran them at about 28 fps before a later speed-up, and has not been measured since.
- The game uses about 11 GB of memory on a 16 GB Mac, so other apps or games running beside it can push the Mac over.
Packing command
Run this in your nxnative folder on the Build Mac. Replace the game path with your .nup file or the folder of the game's files. It builds a Mac app, the only kind tested so far; leave out --platform mac-app for an iPhone and iPad app, which is untested.
