How Taiko Risshiden V DX runs

Taiko Risshiden V DX is a Japan-only release, sold only on Nintendo's Japanese eShop. It plays on the iPhone at 60 fps, by touch. When the project developers last published sizes, its iPhone app came to about 3.3 GB.

Language

The game offers Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, with no English. nxnative's packing script packs it in Japanese. To switch to a Chinese version, set DM_LANG in the app's env.txt file.

How it runs

Tested on the Mac through the notice, the logos and the opening movie, then a new game starting in 1560 as Kinoshita Tokichiro: the opening story, the town, a council with a battle proposal, the territory map, a rest at home, saving and loading, and the field battle tutorial. It held 60 fps with sound, and memory stayed flat over 15 minutes.

At first the game ran at about 55 fps, because its own frame timer never lands exactly on a screen refresh, on any hardware. nxnative now adjusts that timer so frames line up with the display. Scenes where the game deliberately runs at half rate keep their own pace.

Controls

On the Switch the game plays by touch in handheld mode, so the Packed app runs it in handheld mode and starts in the Tap layout. Every touch goes to the game: tap the cards and buttons, and drag or flick the map. On the Mac the mouse acts as your finger.

The layout button brings back the virtual gamepad. In the 3D layout the right stick scrolls the map, and L, R, ZL and ZR switch tabs and lists.

Good to know

  • On a council day, the town's top-right panel runs past the edge of the screen because its text is longer than usual. The game does this itself; on other days the panel fits.
  • Some small unit battles have not been reached in testing yet.
  • Tested with update 1.1.1. Other versions may behave differently.

Known issues

  • The game has no English text. It is in Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, and packs in Japanese.

Packing command

Run this in your nxnative folder on the Build Mac. Replace the game folder and the keys path with your own. Add --platform mac-app to get a Mac app instead of an iPhone and iPad app.

python3 scripts/build_ipa_from_nsp.py ~/Games/taiko-risshiden-v-dx -k ~/keys/prod.keys
