How Luigi's Mansion 3 runs

Luigi's Mansion 3 is playable on the iPhone and, with update 1.4.0, runs at 60 fps instead of the 30 fps it has on the Switch. Its Packed app came to about 7.5 GB when the project developers last published sizes.

How it runs

The game's frame limiter waits for a fixed 33.3 ms per frame. For update 1.4.0, nxnative halves that wait, and because the game steps by the time that really passed, it plays at normal speed: the same walk ends in the same spot at 30 and 60 fps. On the Mac, it was tested through the boot notices, the title, a new game and the opening cutscene, then the hotel lobby at a steady 60 fps.

Bring update 1.4.0

The 60 fps result and every other fact on this page apply to update 1.4.0. Put the 1.4.0 update in the same folder as the base game before you Pack.

Controls

The Packed app starts in the 3D touch layout: a left stick, a D-pad and the face buttons, with a right stick that is not drawn. Touch anywhere in the right third of the screen that has no control on it, and that touch works as the right stick, centred where your finger lands. Luigi moves with the left stick and aims with the right, and the D-pad calls up the Virtual Boo.

Good to know

  • A few effects that use tessellation or geometry shaders are skipped. The game does not draw them much.
  • If you would rather save battery, a frame-rate setting of 30 keeps the game at its original 30 fps. Set it on the app's settings screen or with DM_FPS_TARGET=30 in the app's env.txt file.

Known issues

  • A few effects that use tessellation or geometry shaders are skipped; they are not drawn much.

Packing command

Run this in your nxnative folder on the Build Mac. Replace the game folder and the keys path with your own. Add --platform mac-app to get a Mac app instead of an iPhone and iPad app.

python3 scripts/build_ipa_from_nsp.py ~/Games/luigis-mansion-3 -k ~/keys/prod.keys

Put update 1.4.0 in the game folder to get 60 fps.
