No emulator needed: DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS 2 runs natively on the Apple chip. How nxnative compares with emulators

How DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS 2 runs
DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS 2 plays on the Mac at 60 fps with sound. Tested from a fresh save through the logos, the title, character creation with the game's own name entry, the settings screen and the opening scene, then in control through the prison ship's hold, up the stairs and to the first conversation on deck. No iPhone or iPad app has been built yet.
How it runs
nxnative runs the game with no game-specific fixes. It needed two fixes that now apply to every game: one lets it start without a network, and one finds its graphics programs inside its data files.
The game draws 60 frames a second in the 3D scenes on its own; nxnative adds nothing to the frame rate. Whether the Switch does the same was not compared. Memory came to about 2.5 GB on the ship.
One of the game's threads keeps checking for work. On the Mac that holds about half of one CPU core busy, at about 0.8 W. What it costs on an iPhone has not been measured.
Bring update 1.7.3d
Tested with update 1.7.3d. Put it in the same folder as the base game before you Pack. The base game alone has not been run.
Controls
The Packed app starts in the 3D touch layout, because the camera is on the right stick.
- The title's Press A comes after about 17 seconds; A, A starts a new game.
- On the customise screen, A confirms a colour and Plus finishes. In name entry, A types the selected letter and Plus finishes.
- In the ship's hold, A opens the cell door when "Open" appears.
Good to know
- The hold and the deck have no save point, so the opening cannot be saved partway.
- The game's two movies did not start in 45 seconds at the title; they have not been seen yet.
Known issues
- Only the opening on the prison ship has been tested: no island, building, battle or real save and load yet.
- No iPhone or iPad app has been built or tested yet; its memory use may need a look on phones with less memory.
- On the Mac, one of the game's threads keeps about half of one CPU core busy.
Packing command
Run this in your nxnative folder on the Build Mac. Replace the game folder and the keys path with your own. Add --platform mac-app to get a Mac app instead of an iPhone and iPad app.
