How Pokémon Pokopia runs

Pokémon Pokopia plays on the Mac at about 60 fps through the opening, the character choice and the first area's tutorial, including a 31-minute playtest with no GPU error and no crash. A save from an earlier run loads and continues. No iPhone or iPad app has been built yet.

How it runs

Frames take about 16.7 ms, about 60 fps, from the language list to walking in the first area. Later areas are untested.

The picture has not been compared with a Switch 2, though the playtester found it fine and sunlit ground matches published shots of the game. Shaded ground and walls are lavender, and in some moving shots far blocks showed through near ones; that has not been rechecked since later fixes.

The game has 131,426 shaders. The tested app was built with only the 8,157 its runs asked for; on an M4 Pro Mac those took 16 to 18 minutes, then about 5 minutes for the Mac app itself. Building all of them is estimated at 2.5 hours on an M4 Pro, and no full build has run yet.

Bring update v655360

Tested with update v655360, which the title screen shows as Ver. 2.0.1. It was packed from a folder of the game's files. Other versions have not been tested.

Controls

The Packed app starts in the 3D touch layout.

  • On the first start, the language list comes up: A, up on the left stick, then A picks English.
  • At the character choice, press left on the left stick before A.
  • On later starts, a few presses of A at the title screen continue the save.

Good to know

  • The Packed app takes about a minute to reach the language list.
  • After a reboot, with the Mac's file cache cold, the game can sit on its loading icon for over a minute.

Known issues

  • Only the first area has been played.
  • No iPhone or iPad app has been built or tested yet.
  • Shaded ground and walls look lavender, and in some moving shots far blocks showed through near ones.
  • Writing a new save through the game has not been checked.
  • The tested app held only the shaders the test runs asked for; an app with all of them has not been built or played.

Packing command

Run this in your nxnative folder on the Build Mac. Replace the game path with your .nup file or the folder of the game's files. It builds a Mac app, the only kind tested so far; leave out --platform mac-app for an iPhone and iPad app, which is untested.

python3 scripts/build_ipa_from_nsp.py ~/Games/pokemon-pokopia --platform mac-app
