OCTOPATH TRAVELER

Updated

Every fact on this page applies to update 1.0.5, the one version tested. Other versions may behave differently.

No emulator needed: OCTOPATH TRAVELER runs natively on the Apple chip. How nxnative compares with emulators

How OCTOPATH TRAVELER runs

The first OCTOPATH TRAVELER runs on the Mac at 30 fps, the same frame rate it has on the Switch. It is still an early bring-up: the project developers have played the story openings but not yet a battle, and the iPhone app has not been tried on a device. When the developers last published sizes, the iPhone app came to about 3.6 GB.

How it runs

On the Mac, play got through the boot, the language notice, the title, a new game and the traveler selection, then Ophilia's opening in the cathedral and H'aanit's opening with free play in S'warkii. Frames held steady at 30 fps. Those runs had sound turned off, so the audio is still unchecked.

Unlike its sequel and Octopath Traveler 0, this Game has no 60 fps update yet. The project developers list 60 fps as open work: to lift the frame limit, nxnative still needs the t.MaxFPS and nvn.SyncInterval addresses for this game version, 1.0.5.

Controls

The Packed app starts in the 3D touch layout, because the menus and battle commands use the D-pad. A controller works too.

Good to know

  • In S'warkii you may notice a dark red tint toward the edges of the screen. The project developers traced it to the area's own colour grading and vignette rather than to nxnative, but have not compared it with a Switch.
  • Walking through villagers in S'warkii is how the game itself handles collision, not an nxnative bug.
  • The game does not save story progress before its first save point.
  • Tested with update 1.0.5. Other versions may behave differently.

Known issues

  • Battles, sound and the iPhone have not been tested yet. The iPhone app has been built but not run on a device.
  • The travelers' signatures on their selection cards stop partway through drawing.

Packing command

Run this in your nxnative folder on the Build Mac. Replace the game folder and the keys path with your own. Add --platform mac-app to get a Mac app instead of an iPhone and iPad app.

python3 scripts/build_ipa_from_nsp.py ~/Games/octopath-traveler -k ~/keys/prod.keys
