How Monster Train 2 runs

Monster Train 2 plays on the iPhone and, with update 1.1.1, runs at 60 fps instead of the 30 fps it has on the Switch. It is a small Game: the iPhone app came to about 1.6 GB in the last published sizes.

How it runs

The game is built on Unity, and its animations follow the time that has passed rather than counting frames. That is why nxnative can simply present every frame: captures of the same route at 30 and 60 fps show the game moving at the same speed in both.

On the Mac, the title, the 90-second intro movie with sound, the tutorial battle, the merchant and the route map played at 60 fps with music and working saves, and memory use stayed flat over twelve minutes.

If you would rather save battery, DM_PRESENT_INTERVAL=game in the app's env.txt file keeps the game at its own 30 fps.

Controls

Monster Train 2 does not read the touch screen, so tapping cards does nothing. Play it with the virtual gamepad or a controller. The Packed app starts in the 3D touch layout, whose right stick scrolls the route map as the game's prompt suggests. A selects and plays cards, B goes back and Y ends the turn.

Good to know

  • The intro movie plays once per save. A save that is past the intro starts at the title, where A continues your run.
  • Tested with update 1.1.1. Other versions may behave differently.

Packing command

Run this in your nxnative folder on the Build Mac. Replace the game folder and the keys path with your own. Add --platform mac-app to get a Mac app instead of an iPhone and iPad app.

python3 scripts/build_ipa_from_nsp.py ~/Games/monster-train-2 -k ~/keys/prod.keys

Put update 1.1.1 in the game folder to get 60 fps.
