How Super Mario Odyssey runs
Super Mario Odyssey plays on the iPhone, with a Packed app of about 6 GB. Tested with update 1.4.1.
How it runs
Several fixes were needed before the game felt right. At first the menus worked but the sticks did nothing in play, because the game reads a longer history of controller input than nxnative was filling in. Motion moves, such as cap throws by shaking, also did nothing until nxnative started reporting a motion sensor for each controller. Graphics fixes removed dark boxes behind parts of the HUD and made the Cap Kingdom fog part around Mario as it should. On the Mac, the Cascade Kingdom's waterfall mist now looks soft instead of drawing hard-edged white slabs and triangles.
On the iPhone, 16×16 magenta squares were reported scattered over the scene. They come from a pass that only runs in handheld mode, which is why the Mac, which runs the game docked, never showed them. nxnative now handles that pass, but the fix has not yet been confirmed on a phone.
Controls
The Packed app starts in the 3D touch layout, with the camera on an undrawn right stick: touch the right third of the screen away from the buttons. For motion moves on iPhone, give the phone a sharp flick. On the Mac, Space does the same.
Good to know
- Sound stays off for about the first minute after the game starts. It comes in afterwards.
- A few thunder effects use geometry shaders that do not translate yet.
- Setting the game language to
zh-Hansorzh-Hantnow selects Simplified or Traditional Chinese, instead of Japanese as it once did.
Known issues
- The game is silent for about its first minute after starting.
- Three thunder effects drawn with geometry shaders do not translate to Metal.
- On iPhone, 16×16 magenta squares were reported scattered over the scene. A fix is in, but it has not yet been confirmed on a device.
Packing command
Run this in your nxnative folder on the Build Mac. Replace the game folder and the keys path with your own. Add --platform mac-app to get a Mac app instead of an iPhone and iPad app.
python3 scripts/build_ipa_from_nsp.py ~/Games/super-mario-odyssey -k ~/keys/prod.keysFAQ
